SACC CONNECT

10 weeks | UX & UI Designer

As a UX & UI Designer, I worked with my team to develop SACC Connect, a platform that aims to improve communication across sexual support centres. I worked on user research, prototyping, and improving the user interface. My responsibilities included formatting project documentation, contributing to design ideas, and ensuring that the platform met user demands efficiently.

The Challenge

The redesign problem for the sexual assault center website originated from the lack of a common digital platform, which generated significant communication and coordination issues for sexual support centers across Ontario. Staff encountered difficulties in accessing resources and exchanging information, especially in remote areas with limited internet availability. Our main objective was to inquire: "How can we develop a user-friendly, secure tool that improves communication and resource access for sexual support centres while addressing their unique challenges?"

Research Insights

Prototype

Major user groups identified during the redesign attempt included SAC personnel and volunteers, survivors in need of aid, persons living in poor areas (known as "Black Hole" residents), and hospital and shelter service providers. We conducted interviews to acquire insights into our topic, including an employee at SAC Waterloo, a resident of Woodstock (a black hole region), and a doctor.

Key findings:

Communication Issues: Staff lacked a dependable means for real-time collaboration, causing service delays.

Technological Constraints: Many staff members were not proficient in computers, stressing the importance of a simple and straightforward design.

User Preferences: Filters to arrange services by location, urgency, and category were critical. A map-based tool with visual navigation and mobile accessibility is also appealing for on-the-go use.

The prototyping process began with a rough sketch and progressed to a low-fidelity prototype that defined the basic framework of our high-fidelity design. Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Notion, and Figma helped bring the project to life. We identified essential user needs and preferences through user research, which included interviews with SAC coordinators, and these informed our design of the prototype. The initial hand-drawn concepts were progressively transformed into high-fidelity designs using Figma, resulting in a polished and functioning interface. The final prototype included simpler navigation for easier usage, improved security measures to secure sensitive data, and a responsive design suitable for both mobile and desktop platforms.

Conclusion

Our team successfully developed a final prototype that is accessible, cost-effective, and precise. We are confident that implementing this tool across Sexual Assault Centres will streamline navigation and improve information access for staff.
