An integrated organizational app built to help students manage academics, personal tasks, and wellness in one intuitive space.

Modernizing Student Organization

INTRODUCTION

As students, managing multiple classes, assignments, extracurriculars, and personal commitments can feel overwhelming. Many of us juggle between platforms like Google Calendar, Notion, and university portals, yet none fully address the needs of students who want an all-in-one tool that is simple, customizable, and stress-reducing.

Our project set out to design a student organisation app that consolidates scheduling, assignment tracking, finances, and wellness tools into a single, user-friendly platform. The goal was not only to improve task management, but also to reduce stress and enhance academic productivity.

OUR GOAL

  • Offer customizable features such as colour coding, reminders, and flexible layouts to match individual preferences.

  • Create an all-in-one app that helps students manage both academic and personal tasks in a single platform.

  • Reduce the mental burden of tracking deadlines, schedules, and responsibilities.

  • Support student well-being through integrated mindfulness and wellness tools.

  • Deliver a functional prototype that is intuitive, visually appealing, and genuinely helpful for staying organized.

Through interviews with six students, we discovered a clear pattern in how they manage academic responsibilities and where existing tools fall short.

Many students were frustrated with switching between multiple platforms, often causing missed deadlines and duplicated reminders. They strongly valued customisation especially colour-coded schedules, personalized alerts, and flexible layouts that match different working styles. Although most used at least one organizational app, they felt existing tools lacked student-specific features. Customizable notifications were considered essential, while views on privacy varied. Overall, students prioritized simple, personalized, and functional tools focused primarily on academic tracking, with optional support for personal organization.

  • How do you currently manage your academic schedule?

  • What do you like or dislike about your current method?

  • What features are essential in an academic organization app?

  • How important is customization and visual appeal in such apps?

  • Are privacy, security, and potential data bugs concerns for you?

  • Do you prefer apps with academic-only features or a mix of personal and academic tools?

  • How often do you use organizational apps?

Interviews and card sorting helped us identify student pain points, mental models, and essential features. These insights guided our early sketches, wireframes, and user flows.

Card Sorting

Card Sorting Questions

Participants categorized app features into groups that made sense to them, giving insight into intuitive navigation and priorities. Six students were asked to organise pre-defined topics such as class schedules, budgeting, and upcoming events into logical categories and to select the five topics they found most difficult to manage.

  • Which of these options do you find most difficult to keep track of? Please pick five

  • Can you organize these cards into categories you think are appropriate?

From the card sorting activity, students consistently grouped features into three main categories: Finance, Career, and Academics. The most prominent difficulties involved managing resumes, networking tasks, budgeting, and keeping up with upcoming events. However, academic assignments, schedules, deadlines remained the top priority for nearly all participants, reinforcing the importance of an app that focuses on streamlining academic responsibilities first while still supporting related tasks when needed.

Card Sorting Insights

Testing revealed that students easily recognised standard icons, such as the settings gear, but some features particularly “Finances” and “Jobs” felt unnecessary or irrelevant to the core academic purpose. Users also expressed the need for clearer onboarding and more intuitive task creation.

We refined the prototype by removing the Finance and Jobs sections, adding onboarding screens to clarify app purpose, improving layout and button consistency, and enhancing task creation with clearer icons and a prominent plus symbol. These improvements made the experience more aligned with student expectations and easier to navigate.

FINAL IMPACT

By the end of the project, we delivered a cohesive, intuitive prototype that students found visually appealing and simple to use. The process highlighted the importance of combining interviews, card sorting, and usability testing to ensure every design decision aligned with real student needs.
